What is a module?

The below definitions grant a basic answer to the question of modules.

"An additional mechanism added to a movement, for example, a Perpetual Calendar." (FHH)

"Sub-assembly comprising several components that can perform one or more special functions of a time-measuring instrument .A module can be fixed on a basic calibre to add extra functions.” (Berner)

Modules have existed for hundreds of years in watchmaking. They grant the pragmatic approach to watchmaking to add a complication to an existing movement without the need to design an entire movement from scratch inclusive of the added desired complication/function.

For some, the addition of a module, instead of integrating additional functions into a calibre is seen as a compromise in intrinsic design. However, apart from the financial advantages of adding modules to diverse calibres, modules possess basic technical advantages. These allow brands and watchmakers, to separate the complexities of a calibre into different parts, facilitating production as well as after-sales service.
